About The Gem Carver's Challenge
A minimalist, meditative app in which the user explores rough rock, gradually uncovering the gems hidden within. This isn't a mining simulator or a speed game—rather, it's a calm process of carefully "uncovering" hidden beauty. Each tap is a small step toward revealing what's long been hidden within the stone.
The app's main idea is to create the sensation of an archaeological or geological discovery. The user feels as if they're holding a rock sample and carefully peeling away its layers, gradually revealing the sparkle of the mineral within. Simple actions, a gentle animation of the rock breaking down, and delicate tactile feedback create the sensation of physically interacting with the material.
Main Screen
The main screen is designed in a dark, calm palette. The background is reminiscent of the surface of a mine wall, a cave, or a geologist's workbench—slightly rough, textured, with soft, diffused lighting.
A large, irregularly shaped piece of rough rock occupies the center of the screen. Sometimes, subtle hints can be seen on its surface that something valuable is hidden within: a subtle color tint, a tiny shimmer, or an unusual pattern.
A single "deposit" can contain several precious stones. They are revealed gradually: after one stone is completely released, another section of the rock appears, or new zones open up within a larger stone.
The interaction mechanics are extremely simple:
the user taps the stone, carefully chipping away pieces of the rock.
Each tap is accompanied by:
a slight tactile feedback,
a soft sound as the stone strikes,
a gradual change in the surface.
As the interaction progresses, the rock goes through several visual stages:
Intact Stone
A solid piece of rock without noticeable damage.
Cracked Surface
Fine cracks appear on the surface, as if the stone is beginning to "give way."
Chipped Edges
Small pieces break off from the surface. Sometimes, the first hints of color can be seen.
Gem Exposed
A significant portion of the gemstone becomes visible. Its facets begin to reflect light.
Fully Revealed Gem
The gemstone is completely freed from its rock and glows slightly, revealing its shape.
Collected
The gemstone is carefully "collected" and disappears from the screen, leaving a small niche in the rock. The surface then refreshes, and the user can continue searching for the next gem.
At the top of the screen is a small counter indicating the current deposit, for example:
3/5 gems found
It shows how many gemstones have already been found and how many remain to be discovered.
Gem Collection Screen
This screen is a collection of all discovered minerals.
Each gemstone is displayed in a neat grid—like a small collector's display case. Gems can vary in shape, color, and cut: from transparent crystals to richly colored minerals.
Clicking on a stone opens a larger view:
A large image of the mineral
The name of the stone
The number of times it has been found
This turns the app into a kind of personal collection of discoveries, where you can see which minerals are more common and which remain rare finds.
